PRD Angels was proud to be joining the 2024 Asian Financial Forum as an investment mentor in the InnoVenture Salon.  With a target of connecting startups with potential investors and partners from around the world, the IVS was an opportunity for us to discover new ventures through their pitches, take part in one-to-one business matchmaking sessions and offer advice to startups through mentoring sessions.

PRD Angels was invited to take part in the #Hong Kong Fintech Week 2023.  Lui Tong, our Chairman, HKEX, HSBC, amongst others participated in the Reverse Pitch Showcase as part of the #StartmeupHK Festival. In a switch-around of the usual pitching format, leading and emerging VCs laid out their investment propositions in their own words to investment-ready founders. We have received overwhelming responses and were happy to propel the startup ecosystem in Hong Kong.

PRD Angels has announced its new leadership for the upcoming biennium. Lui Tong was elected as the Chairman role taking over from Founding Chairmen, John Lo and William Yung.. Having served on the board since the start of 2022, Lui said "I'm honoured to be entrusted with the Chairman role. As we exited pandemic, we wanted to be the heart of this exciting stage for innovation and entrepreneurship and giving our support. John and William had taken us this far and built the club with such good foundations, we are ready to amplify our efforts and grow the early stage ecosystem into more success."

We welcome Steve Phan and Charles Cheng joining the board, alongside re-elected Directors Alex Chen, Jason Lau and Mike Grundy.

PRD Angels congratulates its investee company, nami, a leading multi-sensing platform and ecosystem enabler for the Internet of Things (IoT) industry, on the close of its Series A financing round, raising $10.5 million from strategic investors including Verizon Ventures, Amavi Capital, INSPiRE and Aconterra.

PRD Angels has joined the latest funding round for Sparrow, a groundbreaking US technology company at the absolute forefront of advanced A.I. for golf and eventually other sports.  The instant rich data for swing analysis and feedback for personalized instruction represents the best tool for golfers everywhere.

Alex Chen from PRD Angels commented "Sparrow has a strong founding team with multiple exits and is an early mover in the rapidly growing game-improvement market."  Alex knows the product's potential from personal experience, "In just a couple of weeks I was able to increase my swing score from 7.3 to 10.0 and reduce my handicap by 5 strokes."

PRD Angels has announced the appointment of four new directors to its board. Joseph Chang, Lui Tong, Alex Chen and Jason Lau were each elected by the club's membership and will join the existing board to shape the organisation's future.  PRDA board member Mike Grundy explained that "We're pleased to welcome these new directors from such a wide range of investing backgrounds. Adding their experience to the board will help us as we seek out and evaluate the best early-stage investment opportunities, taking the support and guidance we offer to entrepreneurs to the next level."

The Economist hosted an exciting panel on "Art from Adversity: Innovation in the Age of Covid-19" where market leaders explored the challenges and opportunities for Hong Kong businesses looking to innovate in changing times and keep up with their customers' needs.  Our Director, Lui Tong was invited to share her insights.

Lui Tong (centre) interviewed the HK government deputy CIO Tony Wang (left) as he spoke about their Smart City blueprint. In the event hosted by the Zonta Club of Hong Kong, Mr Wang explained the progress of the past three years such as smart mobility, living, environment, people, government, economy, and use of I&T in combating Covid-19, and smart village pilots  and discussed what lies ahead. Drawing upon his own long experience as an entrepreneur and investor, Mark discussed the latest tech trends, the opportunities they present and what this means to early stage investors.

Our Chairman and Co-Founder, Mr. John Lo has written an article published in the official journal of the Law Society of Hong Kong titled ‘COVID-19 Patent Controversy’. A patent controversy has emerged involving Gilead Sciences, Inc. and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This controversy is significant not only on medical and patent grounds, but raises legal and commercial issues. It also touches on whether the Chinese parties’ action violates the letter or spirit of the recently concluded Phase 1 of the US-China trade deal.

PRD Angels hosted a luncheon and talk featuring Tuff Yen, founder and head of Seraph Group, one of the most successful angel fund groups in the U.S. Tuff shared the history of Seraph, now into its eight fund, and its creative approaches to angel investment. Those members in attendance enjoyed greatly the experience sharing and some even signed up as LPs afterwards.
